Information Superhighway Setup

Strobist Information:

When I saw Bald Monk’s latest picture Big strobist fan! it inspired me to have a look through my own box of PC junk (anyone who builds their own PC’s will be able to relate to the ‘box of PC junk’). What I pulled out was an ancient and very broke CD-ROM drive. A few minutes with a screwdriver and a pair of pliers and I had what you see in the picture. The circuit board with the drive mechanism propped on top of it and a blank CD resting on the drive spindle.

My first thought was to put the whole thing on a shiny surface and do the lighting on two planes thing, but looking closer at the circuit board there were a lot of holes in it. I wondered how it would look lit from underneath. I got an old section of light stand box and cut panels out of all four sides to create a kind of upside down table. I rested the circuit board on this and stuck a flash underneath. Not only did the light come through the holes, but it also gave a very nice glow to the whole board. The next thing was to light the CD. I went with my angled white board and bounced a blue gelled flash off it to give a nice purple blue colour which complemented the green circuit board. It was starting to look good, but everything was still a bit dark. I added another flash from the front through a translucent umbrella to brighten things up and finally added one more snooted flash from behind to light up the back of the circuit board.

I was reasonably pleased with the final image, but couldn’t stop myself tinkering with it in Paint Shop Pro. I wondered how it would look if I added a "laser" beam. I quite liked the effect, but with the disk stationary, it didn’t look quite right. I then cut out just the disk and added a rotational blur. When I compared this image to the original photo, I found I preferred it and so it is the one I uploaded.
