This image is better viewed large.

This blue ant isnt really an ant at all. It’s a wingless wasp. The males have wings.

This female is searching for mole crickets in my garden. If she find’s one, she’ll sting it and lay her eggs on the paralysed cricket. The eggs then hatch and the larvae emerge to a meal of fresh (and still living!) cricket (urgh!).

Apparently these wasps have a painful (but otherwise harmless) sting to humans, although they arent aggressive. She’s a large insect at ~25mm long. All other tiphiid wasps hunt beetle larvae.
