This state butterfly of Georgia was everywhere at the nature center yesterday – I saw at least 30-40. There were 17 on one patch of yellow flowers – and for those interested, of the 17 three were dark females. When I turned on our sprinkler this morning, 3 yellow Tiger’s flew out of the lantana.

Btw I saw the first "yard" Gulf Fritillary this morning. Hopefully I’ll get some shots … it’s going to 95o again in Atlanta today – stay cool you all!

Head from a Female Sphinx

The great majority of sphinxes bear the heads of kings on lion bodies. From every period, however, a small number of sphinxes are known with the heads of queens or princesses. This colossal head can be recognized as coming from a sphinx because her hairdo extends horizontally at the back, where it rested along the lion’s body. Her modest hair decoration suggests that the woman was a princess rather than a queen. The damages to her face, including the removal of her inlaid eyes, probably occurred before the head left Egypt. In Rome, it was apparently part of Emperor Hadrian’s large collection of Egyptian art. The repairs, made with stone taken from the interior of the head, may have been made in the eighteenth century, when the head was in the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani in Rome.

Surfer Girl. The only female surfer out today at Morro Rock. Shown here close to Pillar Rock , she was demonstrating exceptional skill in her turns and tricks. One of Nine photos of Surfers, Surfing at Morro Rock in Big Winter Waves, Morro Bay, CA 11 Dec 2009. Many surfers were out today, the first well-behaved day of the season’s first big-swell week in December 2009. Photo by Michael "Mike" L. Baird, mike [at} mikebaird d o t com, flickr.bairdphotos.com; Taken in the morning with a Canon 5D, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8IS Lens, with circular polarizer to significant effect, on tripod; and in the afternoon with a Canon 1D Mark III (10 fps) and 600mm f/4.0 with circular polarizer, gimbal head, and hefty tripod. Extreme overexposure was used on many of these shots to try to eliminate the silhouetting effect and bring out some details in the surfers. The shots taken in the shade of Morro Rock (mostly the right breaks toward the camera) were less impressive than the ones with sunlight (mostly the left breaks away from the camera). This is one of nine photos saved from 857 images taken.
